Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History in Portugal's Dramatic Win Over Croatia

Cristiano Ronaldo Makes History in Portugal's Dramatic Win Over Croatia Age is just a number, especially if you are Cristiano Ronaldo. In a thrilling Round of 32 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Portugal edged out Croatia 2-1, but the real story was the man wearing the number 7 jersey. At 41 years old, Ronaldo scored his first-ever World Cup knockout round goal, silencing critics and keeping Portugal's championship dreams alive. The match at Toronto Stadium was a tense affair, featuring two European heavyweights battling for survival. After Ronaldo leveled the score, it was Gonçalo Ramos who played the hero, netting the go-ahead goal to send the Seleção through to the Round of 16. The End of an Era for Modric While Portugal celebrated, the match marked a somber milestone for Croatia. Luka Modric, the legendary midfielder and former Ballon d'Or winner, played his final World Cup match. The clash against his former Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo was a fitting, if heartbreaking, end to Modric's incredible international career. World Cup Betting Implications From a betting perspective, Portugal entered the match as the favorites, but the tension on the pitch reflected the tight margins we've seen throughout this tournament. Bettors who backed Ronaldo in the anytime goalscorer markets were finally rewarded in a knockout stage scenario. As Portugal advances, their outright odds to win the tournament will likely shorten. However, their reliance on an aging superstar—even one as transcendent as Ronaldo—will continue to be a focal point for sharp bettors evaluating their chances against younger, faster squads in the later rounds. Switzerland also secured their spot in the next round with a solid 2-0 victory over Algeria, further shaping the knockout bracket. As the tournament progresses, the stakes get higher, and the betting board gets tighter. --- Related reading: - World Cup Day 7 Betting Preview: England vs Croatia Highlights the Board - World Cup Day 6: Messi's Historic Hat Trick and a Day of Superstars - Canada Secures Historic First Men's World Cup Win in 6-0 Rout Over Qatar
