World Cup 2026: Ivory Coast Stuns Ecuador with 90th-Minute Magic
The beauty of the World Cup is that on any given day, logic and expectations can be completely thrown out the window. That's exactly what happened in Philadelphia on Sunday, as the Ivory Coast pulled off a massive 1-0 upset over Ecuador to open their Group E campaign.
If you had Ecuador advancing deep into this tournament, you might want to start sweating. And if you took the Elephants on the moneyline, you were rewarded with one of the most thrilling finishes of the tournament so far.
The Late Drama
For 89 minutes, this game looked destined for a scoreless draw. Ecuador, widely considered a dark horse in this tournament thanks to their stingy defense, simply could not get their attack going. They didn't even register a shot on target until midway through the second half.
The Ivory Coast, on the other hand, controlled the tempo. They held the majority of possession and consistently pressured the Ecuadorian backline. The crossbar was the real MVP for most of the match, denying three clear goals—two for Ecuador and one for the Ivory Coast—keeping things deadlocked.
But in the 90th minute, the breakthrough finally arrived. Wilfried Singo made a brilliant run down the right flank and whipped a perfect ball across the face of the goal. Waiting at the back post was Manchester United's Amad Diallo, who calmly slotted it home to send the Ivory Coast fans in Philadelphia into absolute delirium.
What This Means for Group E
This result completely flips the script for Group E. The Ivory Coast has never advanced past the group stage in World Cup history, but this three-point start gives them a massive opportunity to break that curse.
Ecuador now finds themselves in a very uncomfortable position. While their next match against Curacao should be a bounce-back spot, their group stage finale against a terrifying German squad is looming large.
Speaking of Germany, they sent a terrifying message to the rest of the group (and the world) earlier in the day, absolutely dismantling Curacao 7-1. Kai Havertz netted a brace, while Jamal Musiala and a host of others got on the scoresheet.
The Ivory Coast might not be able to hang with the German machine, but they've put themselves in the driver's seat for that crucial second spot in the group. This is exactly why we love the World Cup—expect the unexpected.
