Scottie Scheffler Shot 61 on the Course He Has Never Won
By SBA | Published August 15, 2026
Scottie Scheffler shot 61 in 100-degree heat and turned the FedExCup playoff opener into a formality. There is one strange detail sitting underneath the low number, though. TPC Southwind is the course he has played more times without winning than any other stop on the PGA Tour. Seven tries, zero trophies.
Friday looked nothing like a course that has given him trouble. He birdied the first five holes, made 11 birdies against two bogeys, and tied the tournament course record. His 36-hole total of 11-under 129 gave him a three-shot lead over Viktor Hovland and Sungjae Im.
"Really just a dream start," Scheffler said. "Probably one of the best starts I've had on tour, to be honest with you. I couldn't tell you a time where I've been lower early in the round."
The chase group is better than the gap suggests
Three shots sounds comfortable. The names behind him complicate it. Hovland shot 64 and pointed straight at the thing that actually matters here.
"Hit a lot of fairways, and I think that's a big deal for my game, but also especially at this golf course," Hovland said. "I think it's really difficult to score if you're missing fairways."
That is the read on TPC Southwind. It is a driving-accuracy course, not a bombing course, which is part of why the winner list here rarely matches the world ranking. Im posted his second consecutive 66 to sit at 8-under. Ludvig Åberg shot 65 to reach 7-under. Jordan Spieth added a 69 after opening with 65 and sits at 6-under.
| Player | R1 | R2 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scottie Scheffler | 68 | 61 | -11 |
| Viktor Hovland | 68 | 64 | -8 |
| Sungjae Im | 66 | 66 | -8 |
| Ludvig Åberg | 68 | 65 | -7 |
| Jordan Spieth | 65 | 69 | -6 |
The real drama is the top 50, not the trophy
Scheffler came into Memphis with a 794-point lead over Matt Fitzpatrick in the FedExCup standings. He is not playing for seeding. Almost everyone else is.
The cut line that matters this week is the top 50, because that is what advances to the BMW Championship and locks up access to next season's $20 million signature events. Spieth is currently outside it. Rory McIlroy is in real trouble at 4-over after a 74 and a 70, tied for 60th, and he played the first two rounds alongside Scheffler watching the gap grow in real time.
That split changes how the weekend behaves. Players near the bubble cannot protect a number. They have to attack, which usually means more variance, more birdies, and a few blowups. It is the sort of setup where the leaderboard middle moves more than the top.
SBA takeaway
A 54-hole lead from the world's best player in a low-scoring week is the strongest position in golf, but Southwind has a history of not cooperating with him. The more interesting question is not if he closes. It is how many bubble players go low chasing a top-50 spot they cannot afford to miss. If you're following the weekend, watch the fairways-hit numbers more closely than the driving distance. Hovland already told you why.
