Wembanyama's Concussion, SGA's Clutch Award, and the NHL Playoffs Heat Up
The sports world is moving at warp speed this week, with major awards dropping, devastating injuries altering the playoff landscape, and the Stanley Cup Playoffs delivering their usual brand of overtime chaos.
The biggest news of the day is out of San Antonio, where Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama has officially been diagnosed with a concussion after a terrifying fall in Game 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers. Wembanyama left the game midway through the third quarter and did not return, watching from the locker room as his team surrendered a 14-point fourth-quarter lead. With the series now tied 1-1 and shifting to Portland, the Spurs are facing a nightmare scenario. Concussion protocols typically require 7-10 days to clear, meaning the Rookie of the Year frontrunner will almost certainly miss Game 3 and potentially the rest of the first round.
Meanwhile, the NBA announced its 2025-26 Kia Clutch Player of the Year, and the winner is no surprise: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar took home the Jerry West Trophy after leading the league with 175 points in clutch situations (games within five points in the final five minutes or OT). Gilgeous-Alexander, who is also the reigning MVP and Finals MVP, guided the top-seeded Thunder to a dominant 20-7 record in clutch games this season. He beat out Minnesota's Anthony Edwards and Denver's Jamal Murray for the honor, cementing his status as the most lethal closer in the game today.
On the ice, the Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full swing. The Tampa Bay Lightning evened their series with the Montreal Canadiens at 1-1 in dramatic fashion, securing a 3-2 overtime victory. In Boston, the Bruins bounced back from a Game 1 loss to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 4-2, fueled by a two-goal performance from Viktor Arvidsson. With the Utah Hockey Club also in action tonight, the NHL postseason is already providing the unpredictable, heart-stopping entertainment fans expect every April.
