The White House Shocker: Justin Gaethje Dethrones Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250
If you thought you knew what was going to happen at UFC Freedom 250, you were probably wrong. In what will go down as one of the most stunning upsets in UFC history, Justin "The Highlight" Gaethje knocked out the previously undefeated Ilia Topuria in the fourth round to claim the undisputed lightweight championship. And he did it all on the South Lawn of the White House.
This wasn't just a fight; it was a spectacle. The first-ever outdoor UFC event in Washington D.C. delivered on every level, but nobody expected the main event to end the way it did.
The Highlight Reel Returns
Topuria came into this fight as a massive -520 favorite. He was 17-0, ranked No. 2 on the pound-for-pound list, and looked absolutely invincible in his recent outings. Gaethje, the interim champ sitting at +390, was supposed to be a tough test, but ultimately a stepping stone for Topuria's legacy.
Instead, Gaethje reminded everyone why he is the most violent man in combat sports. After weathering an early storm from Topuria, Gaethje started chopping down the champion with his trademark leg kicks. By the fourth round, Topuria's movement was compromised, and Gaethje unleashed a barrage of strikes that forced a corner stoppage. The Highlight is back on top of the mountain.
Pereira Falls Short of History
The co-main event carried just as much historical weight. Alex "Poatan" Pereira was looking to become the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in three different weight classes. Standing in his way was the incredibly athletic Ciryl Gane, fighting for the interim heavyweight belt.
Unfortunately for Pereira fans, the fairy tale ending wasn't meant to be. Gane utilized his massive size and speed advantage, avoiding Pereira's lethal left hook and eventually securing a brutal second-round knockout. It was a stark reminder of the massive jump from light heavyweight to heavyweight, even for a generational striker like Pereira.
A Night of Finishes
The rest of the card delivered the violence the fans wanted. Diego Lopes set the tone early, surviving a tough first round against Steve Garcia before landing a devastating left hook for a second-round knockout. Bo Nickal continued his hype train, securing a quick first-round TKO over Kyle Daukaus.
UFC Freedom 250 was billed as a historic night for the sport, and it delivered moments we will be talking about for years. For the bettors who took a shot on the underdog Gaethje, you just cashed a massive ticket. As for the lightweight division, chaos reigns supreme once again.
