Thunder Depth Too Much for Lakers as OKC Takes 2-0 Lead
The defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder continued their playoff dominance on Thursday night, overwhelming the Los Angeles Lakers 125-107 in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals. The win gives OKC a commanding 2-0 series lead as the matchup heads to Los Angeles.
It was a clinic in depth and balanced scoring for the Thunder, who covered the massive -15.5 pre-game spread with ease. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren paced the attack with 22 points apiece, but it was the supporting cast that truly broke the Lakers' backs.
A Masterclass in Team Basketball
While the Lakers relied heavily on their stars—Austin Reaves led all scorers with 31 points and LeBron James added 23—the Thunder came at them in waves. Rookie Ajay Mitchell erupted for 20 points and 6 assists off the bench, finishing a staggering +18 in his 30 minutes of action. Jared McCain chipped in 18 points, shooting 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Holmgren was a menace on both ends of the floor. Beyond his 22 points, the versatile big man stuffed the stat sheet with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. When he was on the floor, the Thunder outscored the Lakers by 19 points.
The Lakers simply couldn't keep up with OKC's pace and perimeter shooting. The Thunder shot 55.6% from the field and knocked down 14 three-pointers, while the Lakers struggled to find consistent offense outside of Reaves and James. The absence of Luka Doncic, who remained inactive for Game 2, continues to loom large over this series for Los Angeles.
Looking Ahead to Game 3
The series now shifts to Crypto.com Arena for Game 3 on Saturday. The betting markets aren't showing much faith in a Lakers bounce-back; early lines at BetMGM have the Thunder favored by 8.5 points on the road.
If Los Angeles wants to make this a series, they'll need significantly more production from their supporting cast and an answer for OKC's relentless ball movement. Right now, the defending champs look like an unstoppable force.
