Every NFL Preseason Line Saturday Is Three Points or Less. Here Is Why.
By SBA | Published August 15, 2026
Seven NFL preseason games hit the board Saturday, and here is the detail worth noticing before you look at a single depth chart. Every spread except one is three points or smaller. Every total sits between 35.5 and 40.5. In a league where regular-season lines regularly stretch past seven points, the entire preseason board has been squeezed into a coin-flip range.
That is not the market being lazy. That is the market admitting it does not know who is playing.
Saturday's board, and what the numbers are actually saying
| Matchup | Spread | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Panthers at Bills | BUF -2.5 | 38.5 |
| Browns at Bears | CHI -3 | 40.5 |
| Rams at Chiefs | KC -2.5 | 36.5 |
| Jaguars at Saints | NO -1.5 | 35.5 |
| Eagles at Ravens | PHI -3.5 | 37.5 |
| Cowboys at Seahawks | SEA -2.5 | 39.5 |
Regular-season totals in the high 40s are normal. Preseason totals in the mid-30s tell you the books expect backup quarterbacks, vanilla play calling, conservative fourth-down decisions, and drives that stall at midfield. The tight spreads say the same thing from the other direction. When nobody knows if a starter plays six snaps or sixteen, talent stops being the main input.
What replaces talent as the input
Three things move preseason games more than roster quality.
Playing time intent. Buffalo opens Highmark Stadium on Saturday under new head coach Joe Brady, who took over after Sean McDermott's nine seasons, five AFC East titles, and eight playoff appearances. Reporting suggests Josh Allen and other starters will get some work. A team planning to play its franchise quarterback in a new building is operating on a different plan than a team resting everyone.
Reps already banked. Carolina has a game in the bank already after a 33-30 win over Arizona in the Hall of Fame Game. That normally counts as an edge in Week 1 preseason handicapping, since the other side is playing live football for the first time. It also cuts the other way here, because Buffalo has the atmosphere and the starters.
Roster motivation. Late-game preseason snaps belong to players fighting for jobs. Those players play hard and play sloppy, which produces turnovers, long returns, and scores in windows where regular-season teams would kneel on it.
Seattle closes the night against Dallas at 8 p.m. ET in its first game since winning the Super Bowl in February. That is an emotional storyline and almost certainly a meaningless football one. Preseason is where narrative and results disconnect most.
How to treat preseason as a bettor
Preseason is the worst risk-reward environment on the calendar for anyone trying to handicap teams, and the best environment for anyone trying to practice process. The information asymmetry is brutal. Coaching staffs know their snap plans, and the public finds out at kickoff. If you cannot answer who is playing and for how long, you're guessing rather than handicapping, and small stakes are the only sane response.
If you do want exposure, the more honest angles are the ones tied to information rather than opinion. Local beat reporting on starter plans, first-half-only markets where the plan is somewhat knowable, and totals in games where both teams have publicly said they are resting people. Everything else is a lottery ticket with a house edge attached.
SBA takeaway
The board is telling you the truth this week. Spreads compressed under three points and totals in the mid-30s are the market's way of saying preseason football is close to unpredictable. That is a signal to size down, not to hunt harder. Use these games to test your process, log your reasoning, and get sharp for September, when the lines widen back out and information actually means something again.
